Book Review: Roots by Tara O’Connor

‘Wrapped in real family history and set amongst the natural beauty of the Irish countryside, Roots is a classic romantic-comedy adventure and a page-turning account of a young woman finding herself. On a journey to the old world ― she discovered a whole new world. After a messy year of heartbreak and setbacks, Tara sets off to Ireland in search of clues to her family’s ancestry, but what she found wasn’t at all what she expected. Some of it has to do with the lack of records, but a lot has to do with John, the charming cartoonist she met on Twitter.’

I stumbled upon this book when scrolling through Prime Reads on Amazon. Graphic novels are one of my favourite things to read and this one seemed pretty simple and cute so I decided to give it a go.

The story took a while for me to get into. I kept feeling like I didn’t have enough information to understand what was going on. I eventually understood but that just made me wish for more details of her personal background.

The relationship between the two main characters was nice. It was very heart warming and wholesome. My only issue is that I once again just wish for more background information. The two characters met on Twitter but I would have loved to hear more about that.

My main recurring issue for this graphic novel was that I just felt like I was lacking background information. I just wanted to know more. I wanted more details that were ultimately never given.

The artistic style in this story is absolutely beautiful. It’s simplistic which makes it easier to digest but it’s also got enough details to help you imagine what’s going on. My only issue with the drawings is that Tara O’Connor is supposedly drawing herself, however I can’t see any similarities between the drawings and her photo on Goodreads. I’m not sure if this was her intention or not but this doesn’t change the overall story so it’s nothing to really worry about.

Overall, this book was fine. It was a good graphic novel but it wasn’t one that I would go out of my way to read again.

My rating: ★★★☆☆

Have you read Roots? Does this graphic novels seem like something you’d be into?
